In educating our students, JOGJA IIBS decided to integrate national curriculum of K13 with two modern international frameworks namely STEAM Education and Leader in Me. As we are aware that our national curriculum, K13, has a great goal to create Indonesian generations who are productive, creative, innovative and affective through the integration of attitudes, skills and knowledge, we decided that K13 will be the main curriculum of our school. However, we are also aware that the implementation of K13 is still lacking in some ways, thus we want to make it perfect by combining it with the other approaches.
As K13 national curriculum is principally based on the scientific thinking, combining it with STEAM Education will result to the better performance. STEAM Education is a framework of learning and teaching in which the students should always act scientifically. This framework will always request the students to work in a practical way, in which they have to implement the theories they have learned into a project. By working in a project, students will experience how to do collaborative work, to communicate, to develop their critical thinking and problem solving skills. These skills are really necessary as they are the fundamental characters which need to be owned to succeed the global competition in the future.
Besides, JOGJA IIBS also believes that great skills should come with the best characters as well. Therefore, we also want the students to grow in a supportive environment in which they can improve their characters as the next future leaders. To achieve this, we, then, implement Leader in Me approach. This approach is not only for the students, but also for the whole stakeholders in our school. We want to change the old perspective in education, so that we can maximise every students’ potentials.
By this combination of national and international educational frameworks, we believe that at the end our students will be able to face the global challenge by still possessing the local values and cultures.
